How do computers get viruses and what can we do to stop them?



The internet is one of the most wonderful inventions of the modern day but there are certainly a number of worries that have emerged with its prevalence.

The spread of malicious software, otherwise known as malware, is certainly one of the biggest annoyances which has emerged since the birth of the internet.


Malware can break computer systems, release important data into the wild or even cost computer users money. It has affected millions of computer users in some form over the years and can easily damage the lives of thousands within a few minutes.

How does web malware get onto our computers?
There are millions of pieces of malware lurking on the internet. Some are stored within malicious websites, others are loaded onto innocent websites by hackers, others are found in email attachments.


Cyber-criminals use a range of tricks to tempt you into downloading this malware onto your computer. It could be disguised as something really brilliant like instructions of how to claim a free prize, a pirated copy of the latest Hollywood blockbuster or topless images of a celebrity. This is commonly known as a phishing scam.

Malware can also sometimes make its own way onto computer systems by taking advantage of vulnerabilities in certain web software. Sometimes a web user can be infected simply by visiting an infected website.

In fact, the only way to be truly safe is to not be connected to the internet at all.

What can we do to stop web malware?

There is, however, plenty we can do to increase our protection against the threats that are lurking on the internet. Most software providers will release updates once they spot vulnerabilities that could potentially be taken advantage of by hackers. These are known as patches. By investing in reliable patch management programs, web users can automatically have patches downloaded onto their computer to ensure their systems remain up to date with the safest versions of software. It is also certainly worth downloading some form of anti-virus software for every computer you own. There are plenty of high-quality programs which will detect and kill the majority of threats and are available to download for free.

Falling for web phishing scams can be extremely frustrating and it is worth taking the time to learn about the most common scams. It is good practice not to open any email attachments sent by addresses you don't recognise, not to download anything from a website which isn't well-known and not to give your personal details to anyone online.
