Facebook Launches Video Calling

Bring your conversations to life

Sometimes an emoticon just isn't enough. With face-to-face video calling, now you can watch your friends smile, wink and LOL.

Facebook Launches Video Calling feature for its users like Gmail and Skype.
Now you can chat with your friends from around the world face-to-face. To avail this feature visit
www.facebook.com/videocalling and click on Get Started.

Mark Zuckerberg said Facebook now has 750 million users. The new service, rolling out immediately, could be a huge boost for Skype, which currently has about 145 million regular users.

Facebook's move comes a week after Google Inc turned up the competitive heat by introducing a social networking service dubbed Google+.

Is this a new strategy of Facebook to divert the attention of worldwide users from the most-hyped Google+?

I worked for BT in the UK and when Video calling came out in the 80's it was met with luke warm response. Not sure how it will be met this time as Facebook sort of revels in the virtual world of IM....be interesting though

  13. Brilliant write up. Skype and Facebook are the two windows that remain constantly in focus on my computer and to merge together is a brilliant tool. I bet skype are happy as they will be seeing millions of new users, and too rightly as Skype is without a doubt the most stable and best UI for video chat and conferencing.

Of course, Mark Zuckerberg and his colleague are always thinking of ways to re-invent this ever popular networking site. Honestly, I haven't tried the feature yet. Some says it doesn't work.
I agree with Los sims social. Competition between the two giants is good for the end user. As long as they come up with new and improve features on their site, then who we are to complain?

  74. I'm all for new technology, but I don't know why it all has to be mixed together like this! People who wanted to video chat could already do so over Skype, so why does Facbeook need it too? I know that if it bothers me I can just turn the service off, but I just can't understand why all of these sites need to have SO many features... Maybe I just don't like change?

    ReplyDelete
  75. This is a good tactic to take over G+, some facebook users have their own skype accounts. With these feature, I'm pretty sure it will be a big hit especially for those who video chat all the time.

  91. Confirming our report last week, Facebook has just announced a major new feature that it’s launching in tandem with Skype: video calling.

It’s a feature that’s been rumored for quite a while, and it’s one that Facebook is putting a lot of weight behind. Now, whenever you browse to a friend’s profile, you’ll see a new button nestled between the ‘Message’ and ‘Poke’ buttons that says ‘Call’. Click that, the other user will see a popup asking if they want to accept a call, and you’ll be immediately connected (you’ll need to install a small plugin the first time you use the service).

    ReplyDelete
  92. You’ll also see video calling integrated into Facebook’s Chat product. Really, you can’t miss it — Facebook is launching a new chat sidebar today that by default it takes the entire right side of the screen, and the first time you click on any user you’ll see a prompt asking if you’d like to make your first video call. If you try to initiate a video call and the other user doesn’t respond, you’ll be prompted to send them a video message.

    ReplyDelete
  93. So why is this a big deal? Facebook emphasized the fact that users will not have to create new Skype accounts to make calls, and that this will allow users to call their friends and family with a very minimal amount of setup (the flow for installing the applet only took a few seconds).

Of course, this comes just a week after the launch of Google+, which includes a video chat feature called ‘Hangouts’. Facebook’s video chat doesn’t support group chats yet, but when asked if Facebook will be rolling out group video calling, Zuckerberg said not to rule anything out. He added that one-to-one calling makes up the vast majority of video calling.

Skype CEO Tony Bates took the stage to make a few comments. One important thing he noted: Skype is talking with Facebook about having some paid products available through the web format.

    ReplyDelete
  94. hey im just puzzled, sometimes my chat mates have the option of video calling while others do not,why is that?

    ReplyDelete
  95. My friends have tested this feature and they don't like it. They said that skype is better. However FB is going ahead with big steps. May be the next feature will be helping people to get connected physically: side by side. It would be cool and my dreams about time machines would come true. Great! Isn't it?

  96. Facebook has millions of users and it is really addictive. Video calling will make users talk easily and it will bring more users to facebook.

  109. It’s fitting that Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg streamed his brand's latest "awesome" news: the integration of Skype-powered video chat into the new improved Facebook Chat, which has been souped up to also support multi-person group chats (though not yet in video for that piece — yet).
“A few months ago, we started working with Skype to bring video calling to Facebook,” said Phillip Su, an engineer on the video calling team, on Facebook’s blog post about the Video Calling announcement. “We built it right into chat, so all your conversations start from the same place.”
    Thanks.
