With a small registry tweak, Windows XP can be set to automatically close any program that 'stops responding' (crashes), eliminating the need for you to use the task manager to close down the offending software manually.
To do this:
Open REGEDIT and navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER / Control Panel / Desktop
Modify the REG_SZ entry AutoEndTasks with a value of 1

If you are like me, nothing annoys you more then having Windows tell you that it cannot shut down your computer because one of your applications is unresponsive. At this point, if you want to close your PC, you'll need to go to the Task Manager and terminate the culprit by selecting it and pressing on the "End Now" button. There is a way to remedy this situation, and here's how to do it:
ReplyDelete(Warning: Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft or I cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.)
ReplyDeleteThe next time an application will be crashed when you try to turn off your PC, Windows will auto end it and proceed to shut down your computer automatically.
ReplyDeleteI normally do use the "task manager" whenever I encounter these stubborn programs. And use either "end program" or "end process", the latter is much easier because it shuts it down immediately unlike "end program" which" takes too much time sometimes.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for this tip. It's so much safer and easier to use.
